The orienteering training event on the 16th went well. It started out on the cold side however; once we were moving, the temp was a non-issue. I partnered up with fellow Rest & Relaxation teammate Ron Stevens for this event. Also in attendance from Team R & R was Pam and Rich. They brought family and kids and opted to go for a shorter route.

Ron and I kept a pretty brisk pace. The terrain in Bradford Woods was really quite deceiving...or maybe it was our pace count. We did find every point and returned to the start/finish line before the cut off. There were areas where the terrain required skills just short of free climbing...well, at least the route we chose required that.

Up next is the 12 Hour Conquer the Crossroads Rogaine in Salem IN. This will most definitely be an event that will test our post winter endurance level...and just a few weeks before the 24 Hour Planet Adventure race! Wish us luck!

Official Sponsorship!

Yes, it's true. The adventure racing team that I am on, Team Rest and Relaxation, has landed our first official sponsor! Indy Sports and Family Chiropractic has decided to sponsor Team RnR for the 2008 race season! Feel free to take a look at Team RnR's webpage.

It looks like tomorrow's orienteering event is going to be on the cold side! Perfect for training for the 24 hr Challenge as we have no clue what that weather will be like! An update on the orienteering event will happen tomorrow evening.

Thanks again to Dr Karen, Dr Brean, Julia, and the staff at Indy Sports Chiro! I hope we don't let you down!

Orienteering Training Session

A last minute addition to my schedule has taken place. I have decided to compete in a local orienteering event on Feb. 16, 2008. I'm using this event really for two main reasons...first, to brush up and hone my orienteering skills...and second, to work on some cold weather training.

It is quite possible that the 24 Hour Adventure Race in April could very well be quite chilly in the evening time. The 2007 event was 33 degrees F and drizzling...which made for some pretty horrible conditions.

Orienteering is a great sport. It can be done as a team or individual and generally consists of different route options. Here is a link to some upcoming local events: Indiana Crossroads Orienteering.

On the sponsorship note...I think I may have landed our first sponsor. I'm not sure of what level just yet...I'm hoping to confirm one way or the other on Monday.

Cold Weather Training Ride

Well, what a wake up call! I did a cold weather ride this morning with teammate Ron Stevens. While handling the overall temperature was not a problem from a body temp standpoint, it was simply amazing to see how quick one can get out of shape while trying to heal.

I've not touched the mountain bike sense my wreck in October...and today certainly indicated that I need to have it out quite a bit for the upcoming race season. Having quite the schedule to look forward to, I absolutely cannot ride in my current condition.

Anyway, we made it without a hitch. A tire upgrade is definitely in store before the first race in April. The rest of the bike handled just fine for not having been ridden in awhile. Just basic maintenance due around the corner.

I've decided to take the team to the next level and we are actively seeking some sponsorship for the upcoming season. With this season being quite event heavy, some financial assistance would certainly help out...just the entry fees could smack you around a bit!

So the intense training must now begin...

Training-

I got off to a late start in training and I still need to take it slow and easy. I'm currently going through some fairly extensive chiropractic care for some rib and back damage sustained in a crash at Town Run Trail in Indianapolis. I'm still looking at a couple of months to heal...but training has started.

At this point it is simple exercises focusing on rowing for the canoe portions of the race. I had considered taking the bike for a spin today however; I'm just not a fan of cold weather and decided against it. I think the trail would have been a muddy mess anyway.

Day 1 training weight was 195. I'd like to be down to maybe 175-180 for the race. We'll see how things go.

2008 Event Schedule

Yes, there are more things to do in Indiana than auto racing, winning Super Bowls, and watching members of the local professional basketball team get into trouble at various night clubs.

While not high on the sports radar, Indiana is host to a wide array of other sporting activities. One in particular is Adventure Racing. 2008 will be my 4th year in Adventure Racing and I certainly plan to make it a year to brag about.

Below is my schedule of events as it stands now. I will make posts regarding the training for each of these events as well as how the Teams shape of for each one.

Hopefully it will be a good read.

Date Event Location

April 4-5, 2008 Planet Adventure 24-Hour Challenge Story, Indiana
May 10, 2008 Mission Adventure Race Versailles State Park
June 7, 2008 Planet Adventure Sprint TBD, Indiana
August 9, 2008 Planet Adventure Urban Sprint Indianapolis, Indiana
Sept 6, 2008 Indianapolis Adventure Race (Charity Event) Indianapolis, Indiana
Sept 27-28, 2008 24Hrs of DINO (24 hour Team Mountain Bike Relay) Winona Lake, Indiana
Oct, 2008 Brown County Breakdown (62 mile Mt Bike event) Brown County State Park, Indiana
